Toshiko Oka

Toshiko Oka is a director of a dance group, Ensemble Sonne in Japan. After having studied under Akiko Hoki in Kansai region, she entered the Dance Department of Folkwang College in Germany in 1990. After graduation from the course, she founded Ensemble Sonne in 1992, and has continued to produce works with the Ensemble since her return to Japan in 1994. Her activities are not limited only to dance but also include co-productions with other performing arts. She also organizes workshops on expressing oneself with one’s body. Oka was repeatedly nominated to the Yokohama Platform of Rencontres Choreographiques Internationales of Seine-Saint-Denis and enjoys the reputation as being one of Japan’s upcoming choreographers.
